The “House Critters” Burnt Cookies
The house
critters were bored! The holidays and all the birthdays that followed them were
over. Henrietta Bobbie Bunny, the eldest of the critters, decided they needed
to do something besides laying around. She gathered up the critters that were
downstairs and headed upstairs to get the others. Amy, the young human, didn’t
live here anymore so the critters had taken over the upstairs. Ducky Duck, Big Bunny, Rainy Reindeer
and Blue Booby didn’t seem very interested in what she had to say, which got
her quite upset. Henrietta jumped up on the couch, turned the TV off and told
them they needed to do something and she had an idea. This also didn’t have much
impact, as a matter of fact someone was actually snoring. She proposed they
each think about what was the funniest thing the humans had done lately. There
was some groaning, but each one said they would work on this and get back
together later in the day. Henrietta said, “An actual activity with a reason
you picked it is needed, not just something you make up to be funny!”
The critters spread out which was easy with
plenty of rooms upstairs, although some were better than others. Being critters
the rooms we would think were not good actually were, take Ducky who thought
the bathroom was the best place to think after foot of water went into the tub.
A few hours were spent thinking things over, it turned out that this was fun
after all as a few giggles and chuckles were heard from different rooms as each
critter went over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the birthdays that had passed
by. Rainy actually went to speak with
Henrietta because picking one event turned out to be a harder task than he
expected, as the humans did so many things that were funny when you just
focused on them. When they got back together they all wanted to talk at once.
Henrietta, once again the bunny in charge, let them know this was not how to
present their ideas. The group response was, “Don’t want somebody else to say
my choice first!” Henrietta held a small box with folded squares of paper in
it. She told them she had a number in mind from 1 to 10 and they each had to guess
what it was, the closest got 1st pick out of the box then the next
closest till all had picked. Ties were resolved by her picking another number
from 1 to 10 and the critters that tied guessing again. This took a couple of
rounds as there were times when breaking ties was needed but finally the
picking order was set. The entire pick a number process was to make pulling a
paper from the box as fair as possible with Henrietta set up to get what was
left after all the other critters took their turn. The paper they picked had a
number on it from 1 to 5, which was the order in which they would present their
pick of the funniest human action during the prescribed time frame.
They all
picked and wouldn’t you know that Henrietta ended up with the slip with a 1 on
it, everyone else knew somehow she had rigged the process. She decided to fix
this by taking back all the slips of paper, taking the one with 5 on it for
herself, putting the rest back in the box and having the critters redo the
process. This time Big got the slip with a 1 on it, which was actually ok with
the rest of the group. Big mentioned the choice had been difficult, he also
thought the humans were always doing funny things. He decided that making such
a big deal about the small Christmas present had to be the funniest human
activity.
Next up was Ducky with his pick of Christmas breakfast
preparations by Bob which took hours while the actual time to eat it all up was
lucky to take half an hour.
Rainy thought that the look of concentration while
enjoying a Thanksgiving napkin was the goofiest thing he had ever seen a human
do.
Blue decided the time and effort all the humans spent
making Christmas cookies and then inspecting them so the crispy ones, Barb
called them burnt, got put in a separate container for Bob to eat was really odd
as they all tasted great.
Henrietta pointed out that the activities a human
would go through not to get a picture taken of them was really silly,
especially when it was their birthday.
As you may have guessed by the title of the story when
the critters thought over all the selections Blue had picked the funniest; burnt
cookies!
